How to Encourage a LOVE of Reading
- Read, read, read!
- Provide time for reading.
- Visit the library.
- Read with your child
- Let your child see you read. Model!!!
- Listen to audiobooks above current reading level for higher listening vocabulary and comprehension.
- Invest in online resources like Epic or Razz Kids.
- Show interest in what they're reading.
How to Encourage a LOVE of Writing
- Encourage journal writing in a special notebook.
- Set up a home writing center.
- Make available a plethora of writing materials, including blank cards and envelopes, list paper, sticky notes, scissors, colored envelopes, letter paper, story paper, blank paper, colored pencils, colored markers, crayons, pens, pencils, erasers, pencil sharpener, stickers, blank books, and an alphabet chart
- Invest in online resources such as Grammarly, NoRedInk, SpellingCity, or Evernote.
- Read together and practice storytelling through reading.
- Sing songs.
- Provide time for writing.
- Write with them.
- Play with words. Take a word and find other words that can be made from the letters in that word.
- Talk with each other.
- Recognize, support, encourage, and celebrate writing
- Let your child see you write. Model, model, model!
- Give them authentic writing experiences such as (grocery) list making, letter writing, card-making, etc.
- Read comics.
- Draw pictures.
- Show interest in their writing by asking questions such as Tell me about..., Why did you include? What do you think you could add? What sounds do you hear?
