In addition to reviewing elements of poetry and some specific language skills such as plural nouns, linking verbs, pronouns I and me, and conjunctions, we reviewed word analysis. Word analysis is the ability to break words down into their parts (prefixes, root words, suffixes) to understand the meaning of a word, spell a word, or pronounce a word. Word analysis skills are super important for being a great reader!

<![CDATA[Transition Word Sort]]>Sat, 24 Oct 2015 20:06:09 GMThttp://fourthgraderock.weebly.com/class-blog/transition-word-sortThis year we've been exploring various text structures: cause and effect, compare and contrast, sequential order, and main idea and details. This past Thursday, we learned about transition words and phrases and how they help the reader understand the relationships between sentences in the text.

As part of the lesson, students sorted various transition words or phrases as showing cause/effect, comparison, sequence, or description. As a class, we checked our answers and discussed how different transition words show the reader different text structures.

This week our counselor, Mrs. Hoch, spoke with us about the importance of being kind to others and introduced the Kindness Matters initiative. Kindness Matters was started by the mother of Peyton James, a young boy from Georgetown, Texas who took his own life after being bullied for most of this life. You may read his story at the Kindness Matters website: http://www.kindness-matters.org/.

Beginning this month, our students will have a kindness challenge each week for five weeks until the end of the school year. I ask that you please support and encourage your child to participate in this program. You may also read more about the challenge by visiting the website listed above.

"In the end, only kindness matters" ~Jewel

<![CDATA[Celebrating and Recognizing Each Other]]>Thu, 01 Oct 2015 23:48:38 GMThttp://fourthgraderock.weebly.com/class-blog/celebrating-and-recognizing-each-otherIn our classroom, students have an opportunity to give out Class Dojo points to students they see meeting expectations. Some of the behaviors students choose to recognize and reward are helping others by stacking their chair or finding materials, not talking when others are talking, being ready and prepared, etc.

I am super proud of these kiddos--not only for behaving in ways worthy of extra points, but also for seeing the good in others!
