In addition to reviewing elements of poetry and some specific language skills such as plural nouns, linking verbs, pronouns I and me, and conjunctions, we reviewed word analysis. Word analysis is the ability to break words down into their parts (prefixes, root words, suffixes) to understand the meaning of a word, spell a word, or pronounce a word. Word analysis skills are super important for being a great reader!

During the ceremony, students on all A honor roll, A/B honor roll, perfect attendance, and positive referrals were recognized. Congratulations to those students!!!

In addition, we recognized two of our students for showing us the "Hippo Way". Kayla received an accolade for the Hippo trait of respect. Rayshad received an accolade for the Hippo trait of responsibility. Great job, kiddos!!!

This past Thursday, we learned about transition words and phrases and how they help the reader understand the relationships between sentences in the text.

As part of the lesson, students sorted various transition words or phrases as showing cause/effect, comparison, sequence, or description. As a class, we checked our answers and discussed how different transition words show the reader different text structures.

This week our counselor, Mrs. Hoch, spoke with us about the importance of being kind to others and introduced the Kindness Matters initiative. Kindness Matters was started by the mother of Peyton James, a young boy from Georgetown, Texas who took his own life after being bullied for most of this life. Beginning this month, our students will have a kindness challenge each week for five weeks until the end of the school year. I ask that you please support and encourage your child to participate in this program. You may also read more about the challenge by visiting the website listed above.

Some of the behaviors students choose to recognize and reward are helping others by stacking their chair or finding materials, not talking when others are talking, being ready and prepared, etc.

I am super proud of these kiddos--not only for behaving in ways worthy of extra points, but also for seeing the good in others!

Our week will be filled with activities celebrating the glory and greatness of our Declaration of Independence, as well as the United States Constitution.

As we celebrate this week, your child will have the opportunity to study the Declaration of Independence, including its purpose and importance. They will also recite a key paragraph of the Declaration of Independence

We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness...
In addition, we will study the purpose and importance of the United States Constitution, watching a cool Brain Pop video and doing the Preamble Scramble.
